Places to see

Acadia National Forest

Route 1- If you want to see the coast of Maine, ignore I95 and travel north on Route 1. You will see the real coast of Maine. If you like to eat seafood, lobster, clams, scallops, shrimp- you will find it all. You will also gain fifty pounds per day

Maine also has beautiful mountains- the Moosehead and Mooselucmeguntic areas are beautiful wooded, mountainous areas with lakes measured in square miles not acres. Lots of fishing for Trout and lake salmon. Bring baseball bats to kill the mosquitos (they get fairly large).

Old Port Area of Portland- This is home to various small businesses, restaurants, bars and artisan habitats. Local and foreign flavor mixed together to provide a fun day of strolling through the area on the wharfs.

Portland is also home to Portland Headlight- the most visited lighthouse in Maine. Well kept. You can tour the museum and go where the families stayed during their days here. It also has a well stocked gift shop with lots of nautical items.

Where to stay

Maine lodging, B&Bs

Be warned of one thing while visiting Maine, if you are going to Maine to swim in the ocean, bring a wet suit, the best you can hope for in the dead of summer is a water temperature of 60-65 degrees. The prevailing current prevents this area from warming up.

Where to eat

Portland has:

Captain Newicks- famous for its large portions. You cannot eat the fisherman's platter (if you can-they have a wheelbarrow to help you out the door) Family prices.

Demillos- Built on a barge it sits in the harbor. Excellent atmosphere and seafood.

Chick-a-Dee- in Turner. Just north of Auburn on Route 4, this is the home of the original fried clam dinner. They now serve liquor after thirty years of being "dry". Great prices, large servings, family atmosphere.

Where to shop

LL Beans- If you go to Maine and miss LL Bean, you have missed a treat. Freeport is home to this 365-24-7 store that has EVERYTHING for the outdoorsman and it NEVER closes. Freeport has also spawned many other outlet stores, so be prepared to spend lots of time-and money- exploring this small town just north of Portland.
